The minions of Despicable Me 2 left The Lone Ranger in the dust to take the box office crown for the Fourth of July weekend.

  • The animated sequel notched the biggest opening weekend for any cartoon feature in history with $81 million in sales for the three-day weekend, and $140 million for the full five-day holiday
  • Johnny Depp's star power couldn't put seats in the saddle for The Lone Ranger, which sold only a very disappointing $29 million in tickets from Friday to Sunday -- far less than the $250 million it cost to get the flick made.
  • Melissa McCarthy and Sandra Bullock's buddy comedy The Heat landed in third spot, adding another $24.8 million to its tally.
  • Monsters University dropped to fourth place this week on sales of $19 million -- bringing its total so far to over $215 million.
  • World War Z wound up as the nation's fifth most popular flick this week, with $17.8 million worth of tickets sold
