Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows led the weekend box office with a less-than-stellar $40-million debut. The original flick opened with $62.3 million in 2009.

Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked opened in second with $23.5 million.

Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol premiered in third with $13 million.

Last weekend's top movie, New Year's Eve, dropped to fourth with $7.4 million.

And The Sitter dropped from second to fifth with $4.4 million.
