Black University of Virginia Student Beaten and Arrested

The arrest of a black student at the University of Virginia has sparked outrage on the campus and the university has opened an investigation into what happened. 20-year-old third-year student Martese Johnson was arrested by Alcoholic Beverage Control officers early Wednesday morning outside a bar that he was denied access to because he's underage.

Cops say he was agitated and belligerent and used the necessary amount of force to place him under arrest. A bystander captured the arrest on his cell phone camera and Johnson can be heard pleading with police shouting, "I go to U.Va! I go to U.Va! You [expletive] racists! How did this happen?

Johnson was eventually taken away bloodied and required 10 stitches. A group calling itself Concerned Black Students called the arrest "unprovoked" and "brutish" and then circulated an image of Johnson's bloodied face around campus. Last night, hundreds of students gathered to show support for Johnson who also made an appearance and thanked everyone for their support. Meanwhile, the officers have been placed on administrative leave while an investigation is ongoing.
