FEMALE DESERTER: Sentenced to 10 Months

The military has demonstrated they're all for equal opportunity punishment. On Monday, the first female soldier to go to Canada in hopes of avoiding the Iraq War was sentenced to 10 months of confinement and given a bad conduct discharge.

Private First Class Kimberly Rivera of Fort Carson's Fourth Brigade Combat Team, Fourth Infantry Division, pleaded guilty to two counts of desertion. She had served as a front gate guard at a base in Baghdad in 2006, but failed to return to duty after she was granted a leave in January 2007.

When asked by the judge how long she intended to remain AWOL, she said, "As long as I possibly could, sir….I intended to quit my job permanently." The 30-year-old added, the military "doesn't reflect who I want to be anymore."
