There should be strict regulation of what may and may not be purchased wIth these designed to ensure proper nuitrition.
If gov't foots the bill, they should be able to call the shots. Don't like it? Then don't depend on the gov't. Barry Goldwater warn folks about this kind of stuff.
This is just to crazy....next!!
It does need some type of regulation, take a look at the baskets of some of the families that have food stamps, if they were buying like it was their money I think we would care about what we are feeding our kids. Take a look at some of these kids today, we know that sodas adds weight. Some of our Black families are not making sound decisions when it comes to food purchases. Not only that, we all know that they will sell them in a heart beat, just go to the store on the day the stamps arrives, you will be approached by someone asking you for money as a trade for stamps on the card now a days. Look, Learn then Teach others so that you don't have to depend on no one but your self and not the stamps..

The government should not be allowed to regulate what food items are purchased with foodstamps. Where would one draw the line? Money - "real dollars" - are also issued by the government. Does that mean that the government should be allowed to regulate what is purchased when one uses cash? I mean, our country is currently in a state of financial straits. There is a lot of talk about unnecessary spending on the part of the government, but what about the unnecessary spending on the part of we the people - the fad clothing, the not necessary, but got to have it plasma/ HD tvs? Stop and think, at what point does the government have the right to invade our personal lives to tell us what we can or cannot purchase so long as it is for legal tender? Yeah , I get it. Some of you are thinking, "Shoot, I work hard and I can't buy all of that junk. Why should "they" be allowed to buy all of that when it's government money they're using?" Again, I feel you, but I also know that some of "us" could afford some of that stuff if we did a better job of exercising some discretion in our own spending habits. What gives the government the right to regulate what some of the least fortunate among us can or cannot eat? If I had to go through the experience of trucking down to the county office to subject myself to the demoralizing process of putting in an application, being talked to and treated like crap because some underpaid and overworked casemanager thinks they are better than you...Anyone who can go through the kind of process one has to go through in order to get ANY kind of government assistance, and still feel like a person.. you deserve a snickers bar, and some crab legs!

Getting food stamps is a privilege not a right so get off you high horse that people using food stamps  deserve it. Yes, people that say they can't afford junk when they are watching their money could perhaps do a better job of watching their own money as you say, but the fact remains-they don't buy the junk-and nobody is having to pay for anything that they have bought instead-so it is understandable that buying junk on their dime is upsetting. The idea behind food stamps is to allow people to eat-so the programs should supply the basic" healthy"  things to allow people to do so-nothing more. Nothing free is easy to get because everyone wants something for free. I work in the highest poverty inner city in the country and I am sick and tired of people "expecting" things because they had a less than pleasant experience getting something for free..and that it "entitles" them to whatever they want to do with other peoples money....or buy lobster for that matter. Alot of these assisted programs feed off each other...eat crap on someone else's dime..and then you get free health care on someone elses dime...its a vicious cycle that can not be sustained.  Its unfortunate that anyone should experience being demoralized by their treatment in these programs, but that alternative is then-don't. I am sure there are a lot of workers in the food stamp program like any other business that are unprofessional, but for the ones that are professional, we do our best with people in the program with the attitude such as you day in and day out that take on an entitled attitude, sorry.
