February 1: Black Heroes Reports
We want to know the heroes or mentors in your life? Who influenced you? This is an exercise in creative writing. All reports must be completed by February 10. All stories
will be displayed throughout the center. Sign up at the center’s Front Desk.
February 2, 9, 16: Community Quilt
Children, adults, and seniors are invited to this community-building event. Each person will create their own piece of Nashville or Hadley park history on construction paper.
The individual “quilt pieces” will be assembled as one large quilt and will be on display for the remainder of the month. Community Quilting is from 3:00 p.m. – 4:15 p.m.
February 3, 6: Black History Quiz Bowl and Poetry
Do you know your history? Anyone 12 and older can sign up to be a contestant for this fun, educational and competitive event. Prizes will be awarded for first, second, and third place winners. Sign up 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. at the center’s Front Desk.
February 14: Valentine’s Day Movie Night: The Tuskegee Airmen -- The movie is the true story of how a group of African American pilots overcame extreme
prejudicial opposition to become one of the finest U.S. fighter groups in World War II. Light refreshments will be served. Showtime: 4 p.m.
February 15: African American History Presentation
Come get an outstanding history lesson about the trials and triumphs on the journey from Africa to America from local lecturer Matthew McCoy, 4 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.
February 16: Spoken Word/Poetry Set
Poets and creative writers are welcome to come and express their talents on open mic. Material must be appropriate for all ages. All ages of poets, writers and spoken word artist are welcome. Emcee: Harold Simmons, 4 p.m. - 6 p.m.
February 17: African Dance and Drums Presentation
A story is told or a message communicated with each beat of the African drum. Learn about the making, the history, and the special messages of these unique instruments
from local expert Ephraim Ketsri, 3:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.
February 27: Quiz Bowl/Reenactment Presentation of “Guess Who?” Two events will culminate a month of activities. Youth who signed up for the Black
Heroes Reports will ask the audience to guess their choice as they reenact the attributes of their hero. Also, the final competition in Black History Quiz Bowl promises fun,
excitement and prizes. 3:30 p.m. - 5:00 p.m., light refreshments served.
